About

I started this blog more than eight years ago because I was approaching a milestone birthday (hello, half-century!). This is what I wrote here then:

As much as I say I’m completely accepting of aging and all the supposed fabulousness that comes with it (um, wisdom?), I noticed myself preferring not to think about it. And not in a healthy “oh-what-does-age-matter?” kind of way. So, I decided to face it. And one of the ways of doing that is with this blog. As a friend said to me recently, why not do something that scares you? And one of the scariest things I can think of is to write and put myself out there. As a newspaper reporter, I liked filing a story and moving on to the next one; and as a former newspaper editor I like, well, editing. And editing some more.

One of the ways I’m forcing myself to write and not over-edit is to use a prompt on occasion. I love music, and the prompts will come from my itunes library — specifically, from the the title of the song. Sometimes I will add a song to the end of a post… just ’cause. I will write on topics such as motherhood, sanity (often in conflict), music, running, and maybe, just maybe, even marriage.”

Since I wrote those words, I’ve stopped using music prompts, and the writing has been more infrequent in recent years. But in general, this blog reflects my attempt to find glimpses of meaning in a life filled with children, friends, duties, challenges, and one naughty Norfolk Terrier (now 15). To me, writing means foraging for those small moments that are otherwise easily forgotten or dismissed, but when captured on the page are revealed as the big moments — the ones that make us and shape us, like sea shells tossed and touched by each passing wave in never-ending, ever-changing tides.

I am a wife and mother of 19-year-old twin girls and a son, 21. I’m a former newspaper reporter, editor and freelance writer.

    1. Thanks, Riley, for checking out my blog! Yours is great too. I’ve been much more interested in poetry lately, for some reason and it’s very cool that you are a poet. Lots of wisdom in few words! Take care.
